The Welcome Screen

Flash CS5 welcome screen

Create from Template

By default, Flash has a number of banner ad size templates built in, under the heading of Advertising. You can buy/download more ready-to-edit templates from the Flash Professional Exchange.

Open a Recent Item

A quick access to recently open Flash documents.

Create New

Choose a type of file to create. In most cases, we will create a Flash File (ActionScript 3.0).

Learn

Video tutorials are available from the right-hand column on a variety of Flash topics.

Show/Hide

You can choose to not show the Welcome Screen in the future by clicking the checkbox on the lower left. You can turn it back on in the Flash preferences: Edit > Preferences (Mac: Flash > Preferences).

Document Properties

Four Ways to Access to Document Properties

  • Select the stage, click Edit in the Properties panel
  • Modify > Document
  • Cmd+J (Mac) or Ctrl+J (PC)
  • Right-click the stage, select Document Properties from the menu

Document Property Settings

  • Dimensions
  • Match Contents (only accessible if there is content on the stage)
  • Background Color
  • Frame Rate
  • Ruler Units
  • Make Default

Zooming the Stage

  • Four methods for zooming in or out:
    • Magnification drop-down menu at top-right of stage area
    • View > Zoom In or View > Zoom Out
    • Keyboard shortcuts
      • Zoom in: Cmd+= to (Mac) or Ctrl+= (PC)
      • Zoom out: Cmd+- to (Mac) or Ctrl+- (PC)
    • Zoom tool
  • Hand tool to navigate within the zoomed-in document

Working with Panels

  • Panel Tabs and Panel Menus

Timeline

  • Animation is movement over time
  • A segment of animation has a start and end point
  • The illusion of movement is created by making a series of small changes from frame to frame
  • The number of frames between the start and end point—combined with the chosen frame rate—effects how fast the animation is

Motion Editor

The Motion Editor panel allows you to make changes to object properties (such as size and position) within a Motion tween.

  • The Properties panel has sub-sections which change depending on the object selected
